There are so many different different technologies that are constantly coming out and advertising themselves as the next big thing. The SAMR model is a useful tool to use to examine new technologies and see if they should be used or not. With that in mind I wrote a song about it and did a quick performance to help remember the four different levels!

SAMR Model

Substitution – technology acts as a direct substitute, with no functional change

Augmentation – Technology acts as a direct substitute, with functional improvement

Modification – Technology allows for significant task redesign

Redefinition – Technology allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable

When looking at a new piece of technology, these questions should be asked. Does this simply replace or does it augment what was there previously? Does it transform the task? Which category of SAMR does it fall into?
